Overview:

A pop filter is a relatively simple device. It is basically a mesh membrane stretched taut across a frame that allows sound waves to pass while blocking sudden rushes of air. These bursts of breath are called plosives, and you get plosives from hard breathy consonants like ‘p' and ‘b' during talking or singing.

Popping sounds can be heightened if you have your mouth too close to the microphone when recording. The plosive sounds interact with the microphone’s diaphragm, and might exceed the design input capacity of the microphone, leading to clipping (also known as a loss of information of the recorded sound) which willruin a great vocal take.

A pop filter will ensure excellent sound quality in your recordings and that any unwanted noises will be filtered out and not picked up by your microphone. In essence, it acts as a barrier between these sounds and the microphone, with the aim of eliminating the popping sounds caused by the mechanical impact of fast moving air on the microphone. It also serves to protect the microphone from the accumulation of saliva, thereby increasing the life span of the microphone.

There are 2 main types of pop filter, nylon and metal pop filter with the advantages and disadvantages highlighted below so that you can better choose the type of pop filter that is right for you.

Nylon Pop Filter

Pros

  • Great for beginners
  • Inexpensive
  • Standard in the music / performance industry
  • Great for removing plosives

Cons

  • Audio can be hindered; high frequencies are often removed
  • Nylon is delicate and can be easily damaged

Metal Pop Filter

Pros

  • Designed with wider mesh holes, which has less effect on high frequencies
  • Durable

Cons

  • The metal sheet is thin and can be easily bent
  • Over time, metallic filters can develop a slight whistling sound
